Which side are you on, Ron?

Statement from the Buchholz campaign on Ron Kind’s “Dairy Action Plan.”

Representative Ron Kind recently unveiled what he called a ” Dairy Action Plan “, with statewide media noting his strong support of the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP), the largest trade agreement in history. It’s unfortunate that Mr. Kind would use the plight of Wisconsin’s dairy farmers to champion a trade agreement that is opposed by both the National Farmers Union and Family Farm Defenders.

  • The TPP is not just a single issue about opening new markets for American products, and it’s opponents stretch far beyond just farmer friendly organizations.
  • It’s opposed by health care patient advocates because it will keep prescription drugs unaffordable for millions of people.
  • It’s opposed by labor organizations because these trade agreements lead to a staggering loss of American manufacturing jobs and keeps wages low.
  • It’s opposed by environmentalists because it undermines our ability to protect our air and water.
  • It’s opposed by food safety experts because it may prohibit food labeling that tells us where our food is being grown and processed.
  • And it should be opposed by taxpayers everywhere because it allows corporations to sue governments for claims of lost profits.

That’s why the TPP is currently being opposed by organizations as diverse as the United Methodist Church, the National Organization for Women, The AFL-CIO, the League of Conservation Voters and the National Farmers Union, to politicians as diverse as democratic presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, former US Senator Russ Feingold, former US trade ambassador and republican Senator Rob Portman, and even presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump.

  • This massive trade agreement will affect all of our lives in a number of different ways, and yet most folks know little about it.

The democratic thing to do is for Ron Kind to agree to debates on the Trans Pacific Partnership, especially since it appears it will get an up or down vote in a lame duck congress. The people of Wisconsin and America deserve to know what’s in this trade agreement before politicians like Ron Kind attempt to fast track it’s passage while we’re not looking.

The Democratic Party congressional primary election will be held on Tuesday, August 9th, 2016.
